A family-owned touring and holiday park has been named the AA’s Best Campsite of the Year for 2015.
The accolade for Oakdown Touring and Holiday Park in East Devon, which was awarded a 94 per cent score by AA inspectors, is the latest in a string of awards.
It has received the gold level of Professor David Bellamy’s Conservation Awards for 17 years running and holds a 5 Pennant rating – the highest level – from the AA Camping and Caravan Park Scheme. It was also named Practical Caravan Magazine’s Best Green Site of the Year in 2013.
The site has been run by the Franks family for 40 years and spokesman Alastair Franks said: “We are so happy and excited to be named the best campsite for 2015 by the AA. We are continually striving to better our park and offer high quality amenities. To receive this level of recognition for our work is fantastic.”
The site includes 150 landscaped pitches for touring caravans, motor homes and tents plus 70 fully appointed caravan leisure lodges. Facilities include a café, nine hole golf course, games room and centrally heated shower blocks.
Since the 1990s, the Franks family has been investing in green technology, including reed beds that naturally drain and dispose of grey water and solar photovoltaic panels that produce more than 10,000kw of electricity a year.
Improving green credentials in this way can help to sharpen the competitive edge of a business and attract new clients, while maximising the efficiency of energy and water use make sense from a financial perspective.
