In our latest “meet the expert” feature, Jon Stocker, General Practice Partner based in our Yeovil office, talks about the importance of visiting clients to get to know them and their business, adding value through practical and pragmatic advice and his love of shooting and family time.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
I am a strong believer in going to visit my clients rather than expecting them to come and see me. Firstly, by visiting them, it puts them at ease and secondly, it means that you get to understand the business and how it operates. I am fortunate that I have a large range of clients in varied sectors.
I enjoy the opportunity to visit them and just chat about their favourite subject, themselves, and their business. I think the best compliment I have ever received from a client is when one said that I really care about them. I love to be able to help clients sort out issues and to help them thrive.
What sets you apart from other businesses in your sector?
I think the outstanding thing that makes Milsted Langdon different from other firms of accountants is the belief that the compliance aspect of the work is secondary, and it’s a given that every client would expect that basic level of service.
However, what we as a firm are good at, is getting to know and understand not just the business but also the business owner and what their drivers and motivators in life are, as well as for their business. Unless you understand their long-term goals and what they are trying to achieve in life, then you cannot properly advise the business.
It is important to gain the trust of the business owner and for them to believe in the advice that is being given. It is important to put yourself in their shoes and give practical and understandable advice that, if the tables were turned, you would want for yourself. This advice is what adds value to the relationship and sets us apart from other accountants.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies?
Outside of work I enjoy shooting. Clays in the summer and pheasants during the season. It is also an incredibly good way to meet potential clients!
I have two grown-up sons, who fortunately I have a great relationship with and, although not a hobby I do love visiting them and enjoy the opportunity to have a good meal and a bottle of wine. Needless to say, I am always the one paying!
