New scheme to match fund charity donations this Christmas

A new fundraising scheme will double charity donations raised by small businesses this Christmas, it has been revealed.

The Small Business Star campaign will match donations up to £250 per firm to support the not-for-profit sector during the busy festive period.

The initiative is led by Work for Good, an organisation that helps to connect small businesses with charities.

To get involved, charities need to register for a free Work for Good page here and update their details so they can start receiving donations.

Then, using the Work for Good toolkit, charities should ask small businesses to pledge a fixed amount or percentage of their Christmas sales to them via the donations form – creating a “commercial participant agreement”.

Charities can then claim match funds via their Work for Good account from 9am on Monday 06 December. Work for Good will double small business donations up to £250 per business until the £50,000 match funding pot runs out.

Commenting on the fund, Veronica Bamford-Deane, Managing Director at Work for Good, said: “We are really excited to have launched the Small Business Star Campaign. There are over 5.8 million small businesses in the UK and half of UK turnover comes from these businesses.

“Furthermore, since the pandemic there has been a significant increase in support for shopping small with 59 per cent of Brits saying they now support local businesses more than previously.

“We make it easy for charities to tap into this and engage multiple small businesses that want to fundraise for charity. £1 billion of charitable income could be created every year if one in 20 small businesses donated just one per cent of income. This is valuable untapped income.”
