We have been made aware of a scam involving fraudsters who are attempting to trick businesses and individuals - claiming that they are authorised by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to collect payments, utilising aggressive tactics. We have had instances today where clients received telephone calls from fraudsters claiming to be from HMRC. They falsely claimed that HMRC was owed money and they needed to make an immediate payment, over the phone and that a failure to do so would result in an arrest warrant being issued! We have heard of other instances where ‘fake bailiffs’ have turned up at a person’s property making similar demands for cash to be paid! To our trained eyes and ears, this is obviously a scam but when put on the spot in this way it is understandable that people may fall victim to such a scam. In some instances the conmen are quite sophisticated and appear to have a number of personal details about the victims, which they attempt to use to gain their confidence. Thankfully, our clients refused to make any payments and contacted us instead. Please be aware of this scam and if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be working on behalf of HMRC, take their details but DO NOT make any payment to them. Contact us and we can make checks to verify if the call is genuine or not. If you are due to make any payments to HMRC we will normally already have confirmed this fact to you in writing. Remember – if in doubt do not hand over any money but call us to check if the person making the demands is genuine! |
