UK caravan park industry sees phenomenal success in industry boom

The UK caravan and holiday park industry has seen phenomenal success of late, in an industry boom assisted by big-budget mergers and increased caravan and motorhome sales.

Site operator Parkdean, who recently agreed a £1 billion merger with Park Resorts in September 2015, revealed to the press that it saw 1.8 million customers set up approximately 35,000 pitches across its holiday parks in the last summer season alone – generating some 7,000 jobs for the industry.

Further studies have revealed an industry boom in the popularity of caravan parks in recent years.

Statistics from VisitEngland said that new motorhome registrations rose 21.1 per cent last year, and there was a 10.2 per cent rise in the sale and dispatch of new vehicles.

Furthermore, holidaymakers spent some £1.9bn on holiday parks and caravanning in England alone in 2015.

Mr John Waterworth, owner of caravan site operator Parkdean, referenced improved camping facilities as partly responsible for his company’s recent success.

“There’s a really big market for family holidays and short breaks in the UK,” he said.

“If you look at a caravan 20 years ago to one today, they’re considerably different,

“It’s quite hard to get across to those people who haven’t holidayed in a caravan for a long time how much it’s changed.”

According to the National Caravan Council, the sale of new and used vehicles, holidays and related spend contributes about £6bn to the UK economy each year.
