Charity leaders get the latest financial update from Milsted Langdon at TBE South West Charity Conference & Expo 2025

The heads of some of the UK’s top charities and not-for-profits have taken part in this year’s TBE South West Charity Conference & Expo 2025.

Sponsored by one of the region’s leading accountancy firms, Milsted Langdon, the conference provided the sector with useful guidance via a series of insightful talks.

Focused on positivity, community and solidarity, this year’s event also hosted more than 50 exhibitors and helped to establish important connections, in line with these key themes.

One of the speakers at this year’s conference and Head of Charities and Not for Profit at Milsted Langdon, Tim Lerwill, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the conference, which is now in its seventh year.

“Being able to meet with industry leaders and find solutions to their problems is always really valuable to us as a practice.

“The charity and not for profit sector continues to face challenging headwinds, but events like this are a great way for the sector’s leaders to share insights and formulate new strategies.”

Tim was joined by an exciting roster of experts, which included Becky Brooks from BANES 3SG, J Cromack, Chief Revenue Officer at Wood for Trees, part of Salocin Group and Laurie Trounce, Head of Charity Law at Stephens Scown.

However, it was the headline speaker Deborah Hale MBE who brought unique perspectives to the event.

Drawing on three decades of experience working on stakeholder engagement, campaign development and major events, Deborah shared tales and guidance from her experience producing the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays and her time as Facebook’s Marketing Director for EMEA.

She talked about how strategic community engagement was often catalyst to achieving real change.

Alastair Greener, a specialist in generational communication, also grabbed the attention of the crowd, as he offered practical tools and challenged common myths, helping charities better connect with diverse age groups.

Drawing the event to a successful conclusion, Tim Lerwill, provided timely financial insights.

He addressed key issues, such as rising staff costs, record-keeping, and capital project planning.

In particular, he emphasised the value of professional advice in supporting long-term sustainability and good governance within charities.

“I was delighted I could impart some of my knowledge and expertise to those in attendance, based on the practical experiences supporting our own clients in this sector,” said Tim.

“Working with professional advisers can be a great investment for charities and not-for-profits, as the outside perspective and expertise often helps organisations spot opportunities and swiftly resolve any challenges.”
