Meet the Expert – A quick Q&A with Alex Mitchell

In this edition of our “Meet the Expert” series, we speak with Alex Mitchell, a Corporate Finance specialist at Harbourside Corporate Finance, who shares his passion for helping SMEs navigate Mergers and Acquisitions, his perspective on business growth, and what he enjoys doing outside of work.

Tell us about your experience

I’ve spent much of my career working in Corporate Finance, helping businesses create value, whether through growth strategies, raising finance, or incentivising key employees. I’ve also worked extensively with companies looking to exit, transitioning ownership to the next generation or selling up entirely.

Although much of my background is in the software and technology sectors, I now specialise in helping SMEs. It’s incredibly rewarding to work with business owners, particularly when they’re navigating the complexities of Mergers and Acquisitions.

With the changes announced by the Labour government in the Autumn 2024 budget, many businesses face increased costs and higher tax bills when exiting. That’s why expert guidance is crucial to ensure owners get the true value for the hard work they’ve put in.

What one key piece of advice would you share?

Don’t hesitate to ask questions if something isn’t clear. A smooth M&A process depends on clarity at every stage.

Deals often fall apart when parties assume agreed terms are understood in the same way, but they’re actually being interpreted differently. I always recommend using worked examples to ensure everyone is on the same page, working towards the same goal.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

After hanging up my hockey stick following a few too many injuries, I keep fit by running around Bristol Harbour. I’m always on the lookout for new sports or activities to try. Fencing and improv theatre are next on my list. When I’m not being active, you’ll find me hunting for a good board game or working on my passion for puzzles, including solving or writing cryptic crosswords.
