In this edition of our “Meet the Expert” series, we speak with Mark Birchenough, one of our experienced charity specialists, who shares his passion for the not-for-profit sector, his perspective on charity reporting, and what he gets up to outside of work.
Tell us about your experience
I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the early 1990s while working at a small firm in Exeter, and it was there that I first developed an interest in working with charities, just a few years before the first Charities SORP was introduced.
Since then, I’ve worked with a wide variety of not-for-profit organisations, including hospices, animal welfare charities, addiction support services and academy schools.
Each has its own unique story, but many face similar challenges around making a meaningful impact with limited resources.
What I enjoy about working in this sector is helping clients look beyond the numbers. A charity’s annual report isn’t just about financials. It’s a chance to share their objectives, achievements, and the difference they make. I take great pride in helping clients tell that story.
What one key piece of advice would you share?
When working with charities, it’s important to understand that performance isn’t always about making a profit.
Charities receive and spend funds in line with their purpose, and the timing of that activity can mean they report a surplus or a deficit in any given year.
A deficit doesn’t necessarily mean something’s gone wrong. It could simply reflect that they’re using funds built up in previous years, as intended.
Understanding that context is vital in offering meaningful support and advice to trustees and management teams.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
Travel is a real passion of mine. I’ve been lucky enough to explore Australia, New Zealand and East Asia, along with plenty of destinations across Europe. My favourite place so far has to be New Zealand’s South Island. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
I enjoy the planning just as much as the travelling, so I’m often found researching the next trip in the evenings.
I’m also a big football fan and follow Leicester City, experiencing all the ups and downs that come with it!
