In our latest “Meet the expert” feature, Clare Parsons, Business Innovation Supervisor, tells us about creating bespoke reporting solutions for clients, what to do when looking to change software providers, and her love for netball.
Tell us about your role.
My day-to-day tasks are so varied that every day is different! Typically, tasks involve forecasting and cashflows and creating solutions for clients that request bespoke reporting and require something that is not provided in the standard software package.
I also help with management accounts, extracting data from software, that is often bespoke or unfamiliar, and producing timely management information in a format suitable for the individual client needs.
With so many different software packages and providers available, what may be suitable for one client may not be for another so it’s important to understand the different features provided by each package. My role has enabled me to gain experience in both using and understanding some of the less familiar packages.
When accounting issues arise, often through misunderstanding of the software being used or setup errors, another task of mine is to help iron out these issues with both the client and the software provider.
What advice would you give to a client who is looking to change software providers?
As mentioned above, not everyone’s needs are the same so it’s important that you seek advice before committing to a major contract with a software provider.
Although in the moment, you may think you are getting sold a “good” piece of software, it could end up being too complex for your business and may not necessarily be suitable for your needs.
As well, timing is an important factor when looking to change software providers as this can cause various issues, in particular VAT return issues, leading to more work and extra costs so I would recommend speaking to an expert before switching.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies?
I play social league netball with my daughter who also plays netball in the Somerset league which I typically go and watch and help with the scoring board!
We also watch Team Bath play home matches in the Netball Super League which is a great experience that we really enjoy!
