In our latest “Meet the Expert” feature, Mike Bagg, Tax Partner based in our Yeovil office tells us about the areas that he specialises in, advises clients to ensure the simple tasks are completed correctly when it comes to tax planning and what he enjoys outside of work.
Tells us about your role.
I am a tax partner, based in our Yeovil office. Despite such a broad description of tax partner, I specialise in income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax and the taxation of trusts – the “personal taxes”, leaving the corporate and business taxes to my esteemed colleagues who specialise in that area.
I am also an authorised individual for probate, meaning I can apply for probate on behalf of clients, and administer deceased estates.
My day-to-day role varies from reviewing client tax returns, advising on potential tax planning, managing my team of incredible tax specialists, and trying to keep the Yeovil office fun, happy and healthy!
What piece of general tax planning advice would you give to clients?
Get the simple bits right and then do the more complicated bits! Tax planning can be a complex subject but too often we hear in the tax press about potential tax advantages being missed because a form was filled in incorrectly, not filled in at all, submitted to HMRC late, etc.
All good tax planning relies on good implementation, recordkeeping, and disclosure to HMRC. My clients get a good night’s sleep, knowing their tax affairs are being well looked after.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies?
Outside of work, you will generally find me on a golf course with friends, at the beach with family (and the dog) or at home watching Clarkson’s Farm.
